The below workings are provided to support our full article found here. These are subject to changes in milk prices and beef/lamb schedule.
Beef
- 3kg N at average response rate of 15:1 (for hill country) = 45kg DM/ha
- 45kg DM/ha converted into liveweight = 45 ÷ 10kg DM/kgLW (10 is conservative for bull beef, typical for steers) = 4.5kg LW/ha
- Liveweight converted into carcass weight = 4.5kg LW x 0.55 (55% kill out percentage) = 2.5kg CW/ha
- CW x schedule = 2.5 x $5.00/kg CW = $12.50/ha
Sheep
- 3kg N at average response rate of 15:1 (for hill country) = 45kg DM/ha
- 45kg DM/ha converted into liveweight = 45 ÷ 10kg DM/kgLW (10 is conservative for lambs) = 4.5kg LW
- Liveweight converted into carcass weight = 4.5kg LW x 0.42 (kill out percentage) = 1.9kg CW
- CW x schedule = 1.9 x $7.00/kg CW = $13.30/ha ($7/kg CW is conservative with current lamb prices of around $8.30/kg)
Dairy
- 3kg N at average response rate of 12:1 for Dairy farms = 36kg DM/ha
- 36kg DM/ha = 2.4kg MS
- 2.4kg MS at $6.75/kg = $16.20/ha
- Therefore, $16.20/ha extra income
