DAP

Fertilisers

DAP contains similar quantities of N and P (18% and 20%, respectively) and is used on pasture and crops, particularly where little or no S is required. It is frequently used as a starter fertiliser for crops such as maize.

Product pricing

DAP is not manufactured in New Zealand because of the relatively small market and high costs of production. It is produced by reacting phosphoric acid with ammonia, and their high physical quality is achieved by drying the product during granulation.

Advantages of using DAP:

  • Boosts crop growth and pasture production with a nitrogen response while applying phosphate at the same time
  • A cost effective option for applying P and N. S can be added if required
  • Helps promote growth into the shoulders of the season

Phosphate

Fertilisers

A lack of phosphate (P), shown by Low Olsen P or Resin P levels, will reduce the quality, quantity and palatability of pasture, and will be reflected in overall stock performance. Ballance offers a range of products providing phosphorus, to help you achieve your objectives. These product ranges can be tailored to your individual requirements.

Product pricing
Ballance offers a full range of phosphate fertilisers suitable for a wide variety of situations. Phosphate is a major plant nutrient and has traditionally been regarded as one of the key growth-limiting nutrients in New Zealand farm soils. Careless use of phosphate fertilisers can have negative environmental consequences. Ballance recommends that users follow the guidelines in the Code of Practice for Fertiliser Use. Special care should be taken to ensure that phosphate fertilisers do not enter vulnerable ecosystems such as waterways.

Ballance's list of phosphate fertilisers includes its key products Superten, Enviroking, Pasturezeal G2, Pasturemag and Cropzeal. The company also has a strategic alliance with Hatuma Lime, which allows for nationwide manufacture and distribution of dicalcic phosphate products.

The below product range is also available from Ballance. This list is offered for guidance only. For specific advice on the best phosphate option for your farming situation, contact your local Ballance Field consultant.

PotasH

Fertilisers

Potassium (K) is an essential nutrient for both plants and animals, and while significant quantities of K come from soil reserves, the relatively high rate of removal of K in farm produce (particularly crops) means that regular applications of fertiliser K are often required.

Product pricing
Potassium (K) can be added to most base products to give a range of P to K ratios. Standard formulations containing potash are widely used, but there are two types of naming conventions for these. Products may be named for the amount of the nutrient K they contain (e.g. Superten 5K contains 5% K) or for the amount of MOP they contain (e.g. 20% potash sulphur super contains 20% MOP, which is equivalent to 10% K).

MOP and SOP are widely used on dairy farms, hay and silage paddocks and on high K-demanding crops. On chloride-sensitive crops (e.g. kiwifruit), SOP should be used rather than MOP.

Both MOP and SOP are imported from overseas.

Magnesium

Fertilisers

In their virgin state, most New Zealand soils were not magnesium (Mg) deficient, the exception being coarse pumice soils. However, in recent decades the need for Mg fertiliser has grown. This situation has arisen because Mg has been removed in product and by leaching, and without replenishment, soil Mg reserves have become depleted.

Product pricing
Ballance offers a full range of magnesium fertilisers suitable for a wide variety of situations. Magnesium is a major plant nutrient and is particularly important for the maintenance of good animal health.
Ballance's key product Pasturemag is a good source of magnesium. The following products are also available from Ballance. This list is offered for guidance only. For specific advice on the best magnesium option for your farming situation, contact your local Ballance Field consultant.

  • Serpentine Super and Granulated Calmag are Fertmark-registered products, giving you assurance that what’s on the label is what’s in the bag
  • Serpentine Super 5K, 7K, 10K, 15K and 25K are blended from Fertmark-registered products
  • Purchases of these magnesium products qualify for a rebate under the terms and conditions of the Ballance shareholding scheme
  • Products can be ordered in bulk, 1000 kg, 500 kg or 40 kg bags.

Sulphur

Fertilisers

Ballance offers a full range of sulphur fertilisers suitable for a wide variety of situations. Sulphur is a major plant nutrient and has traditionally been regarded as one of the key growth-limiting nutrients in New Zealand farm soils.

Product pricing
Fertiliser sulphur can be applied in two forms - sulphate sulphur, which is rapidly available to plants but subject to loss by leaching through cold, wet weather, and elemental sulphur, which is slowly changed into sulphate sulphur and is not at risk of loss by leaching.

If you are interested in sulphur fertilisers, the following key products may be useful:

  • Sulphurgain
  • Superten
  • Pasturezeal G2
  • Pasturemag
  • Cropzeal

Each of these products contains significant levels of sulphur, and in most instances, additional sulphur can be added to meet your requirements.
